Layers of tears!

We all know that the worst part about cooking with onions is the chopping of them. Here are some quick tips to how you can cook onions without crying.

  1. Chill the onions in the fridge for about half an hour or the freezer for fifteen minutes before chopping.
  2. Dunk your onions into cold water for 20 minutes first.
  3. Use a sharp knife. Using a blunt knife will crush the cell walls, rather than cleanly slice through them—this crushing releases more of the gas that hurts your eyes.
  4. If your recipe calls for chopped onions, cut a cone out of the root base, removing the root in its entirety—this central core of the onion contains the bulk of cells that release those eye-irritating gases.
  5. Chop onions near a fan or underneath the vent fan over your stove to help draw away the gas.
  6. Chop you onions next to a lit flame, this will draw the gasses released towards the flame.
  7. Try chopping whilst you eat a piece of white bread, many people claim this works.
  8. Chew gum while you chop.
  9. If all else fails why not get out the blender!
